Deals signed with two Chinese cos to build power plants

The government has assigned two Chinese firms Monday as turnkey contractors to build two gas-fired power plants to generate a total of 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity by 2011 next.

The state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) signed separate contracts Monday with the China Chengda Engineering Co Ltd for setting up Chandpur 150 MW combined cycle plant and Shanghai Electric Group Co Ltd for building Sylhet 150 MW plant.

The Chandpur 150 MW plant will cost around Tk 10.05 billion (US$ 146 million), while Sylhet 150 MW plant will involve around Tk 7.04 billion ($ 105 million).

Expected commissioning date of the gas turbine unit of Chandpur 150 mw plant is June 15, 2011 and its steam turbine unit December 31, 2011.

While the commissioning date of the Sylhet 150 mw plant has been set for September 25, 2011.

PDB secretary Md Eskender Ali and Board chairman of China Chengda Engineering Co Ltd Cao Guang singed the contract for the Chandpur 150 mw power plant, while Eskender Ali and vice president of Shanghai Electric Group Co Ltd Zhu Denian signed contract for Sylhet 150 mw plant.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith, energy adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, state minister for power Enamul Haque, power secretary Abul Kalam Azad and PDB chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir were among others attended the contract signing ceremony at Bidyut Bhaban in the city.
