DST again from Mar 31

STAFF REPORTER
The clock would be moved forward again by one hour from midnight of March 31 in line with daylight saving time (DST) according to the decision of the cabinet.
Secretary of the Power Division M Abdul Kalam Azad informed yesterday that the clock would be moved forward again by one hour from midnight of March 31 and it would remain in force till October 31.
He said the decision in this regard was made for conservation of daylight taking into consideration the rise in demand of electricity across the country.
The government introduced the DST in June for saving nearly 200 megawatts of electricity during peak hours and with a view to ensuring supply of electricity for irrigation purposes.
Ataul Masud, managing director of Dhaka Power Development Company (DPDC), said, “The volume of electricity to be saved is not the main matter, the DST would be helpful in meeting the demand for electricity in the capital city.”
According to sources in the Power Division, the country might experience extensive loadshedding in the current summer as the demand for power for irrigation purposes has risen between 1,500 MW and 1,600 MW following decision of the government to enhance the target for Boro paddy production compared to the previous season.
A senior official of the Power Division informed that as against a total demand of 6,000 MW in the current summer, the generation of power from the Power Development Board might reach 4,100 MW to 4,200 MW per day.
Sources in the Power Ministry said that the government had already initiated various projects to face successfully the electricity crisis, which would take two to three years to implement.
